I find it slightly ironic that people opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics whilst many will happily post all sorts of personal details on an unsecured Facebook site, or have limited knowledge/resiliance to phishing techniques, for example! I'd support the view that many concerns are driven by media hype. However, people need to be educated and direct their fear towards the actual threats rather than perceived ones.

The EU Directive has been roundly criticised in the UK for being poorly thought out and difficult (impossible) to implement for those legitimately collecting anonymised visitor data.

The biggest problem we're finding, as a local authority, is a lack of clarity around the EU directive and what it does actually mean to our web users. Some of the points are so open to interpretation that I've seen articles saying Google Analytics is an issue because there's no 'opt-out', and others saying the cookie directive does not really apply to it sufficiently to warrant concern!

No, those words don't harm you. A human who reads that title or a review of it isn't going to interpret that as negative. It's a mighty small segment of humanity that is using social media monitoring tools with sentiment, and they are a pretty discerning bunch, far too discerning and critical to accept that negative assessment without peeking under the hood.

Sentiment analysis is a young field, and it isn't perfect. But the state of the art is much better than what you seem to have in this case. A well-designed linguistic engine should not base sentiment assessments on titles, and you could make a good case that "leaky boat" shouldn't be interpreted as negative sentiment. Are you certain that this is the reason for the negative assessment?

Like you, I've also come across this statistic being mentioned, and I also had a difficult time believing it could be quite that high...at least until it was explained that many daily searches cover news events that have just happened, or are related to very recent events.

When you think about that, you realize that 20% is probably fairly reasonable. It also highlights how much SEO leverage many web publishers and SEOs leave untapped by not weaving current news and conversation into their SEO tactics.

I suppose if you account for people searching phone numbers, [persons name] + [other info], and other bits of random information you could get in the 20% range.. but I agree it seems really high!

I attended a marketing event about social media and it struck me that among the attendees who asked intelligent questions at question time were those who made notes during the presentation.

One cannot make notes and tweet and if you are busy tweeting how well are you listening?

I totally agree with website optimization being a must do! I've had my boating website for just about ten years now and have recently found out about how important seo was! I've always followed the rules of making sure that my titles were unique, that my keywords and descriptions were only about that page, and that the page had information that for that matter matched the title, keywords, description and the body itself. I've recently found out how important backlinks are. In just a couple of months, I found out that by trading links with other websites, getting links from other sites, and doing press releases that i could not only increase my traffic but quadruple my traffic each week! It's been quite an amazing past few weeks really. People have been calling, emailing, writing, and joining the site in droves. All from getting the ever important SEO done. And it's not cheap. You have to hire someone stateside that has a brain to be able to do it right.

Thanks for spreading the word of SEO and leaky boats...

I'm truly enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It's a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme? Excellent work!
